Uber CEO Travis Kalanick’s mother died in a boating accident on Friday, while the father is in a serious condition.
Bonnie,71, and Donald Kalanick, 78, were on a boat on Pine Flat Lake near Fresno, Calif., on Friday afternoon when the boat hit a rock and sank. Fresno emergency rescue personnel were quick to the spot where the incident took place but found Bonnie unresponsive, but her husband was taken to a nearby hospital.
A spokesperson for Uber said that “last night Travis and his family suffered an unspeakable tragedy. His mother passed away in a devastating boating accident near Fresno and his father is in serious condition. Our thoughts and prayers are with Travis and his family in this heartbreaking time.”
The spokesperson also said that Uber HR boss Liane Hornsey emailed employees on Saturday in which she promised to keep the company’s 12,000 employees tuned, saying that “this is an unthinkable tragedy as everyone in the Uber family knows how incredibly close Travis is to his parents.”
In a statement, The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office said that an investigation into the incident is to be carried out, moreover, an autopsy of the woman is scheduled on Sunday, the office said
“A preliminary report indicates the boat struck a rock and the man and woman on the boat suffered injuries from the collision,” the sheriff’s statement said.
The couple was said to be longtime boaters.
Kalanick reportedly shared a highly intimate relationship with parents, a close source to Kalanick said. Just around two weeks ago, he took to Facebook to post two photos of him and his mother: one taken while he was young and the other one is new, Kalanick’s post reads, “I appreciate my mum, her infinite love and huge [heart] more and more.”
