Two U.S. men met their end as they were fatally stabbed in the city in the US after hurling to help two Muslim women, one of them was wearing hijab, who were being harassed.
Two women have found themselves a target of an Islamophobic attacker who kept throwing ethnic and religious oaths at them on a commuter train at the Hollywood transit station, the Portland police department said in a statement.
According to the police, the attacker was arrested the moment he got off the train; however, both women fled before the police could interview or question them.
A spokesman for Portland police spokesman, Pete Simpson “In the midst of his ranting and raving, some people approached him and appeared to try to intervene with his behaviour and some of the people that he was yelling at. They were attacked viciously by the suspect.”
Portland police neither identified the suspect nor the victims. The victims were three: two were stabbed to death; however, the third was undergoing treatment for non-life threatening injuries.
Responding to the attack, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (Cair) released a statement, saying that anti-Muslim incidents in the US had skyrocketed by more than 50% in 2016 compared to 2015. Cair partially laid the blame for committing hate crimes against Muslim on Trump’s door as he focuses on militant Islamist groups and anti-immigrant rhetoric in his speech which prompted a false, distorted image of Muslims.
“President Trump must speak out personally against the rising tide of Islamophobia and other forms of bigotry and racism in our nation that he has provoked through his numerous statements, policies and appointments that have negatively impacted minority communities,” said Cair’s national executive director, Nihad Awad.
The administration the problem is with Islamist militants, not Islam itself.
The attack took place on Friday afternoon, few hours before the start of Ramadan, Islam’s holy month, when Muslims all over the world have a religious fast.
