Former England and Manchester United footballer Rio Ferdinand have revealed that he wants to take up boxing to be able to make him focus more after going through a difficult time in his life.
Ferdinand lost his wife to breast cancer in 2015 and retired from active football that year to be able to cater for their three children.
“This is just another way for me to channel all that aggression and sometimes anger and emotions into a thing that I can keep me focused, ” Ferdinand said.
Ferdinand will be trained by Richie Woodhall, a former WBC super-middleweight champion Richie Woodhall, and had earlier stated that he would be aiming for a belt.
I Respect The Sport
However, later revealed in a news conference that he had the greatest respect for the boxing community and it would be disrespectful on his part to say that he was going to win a title as there are other boxers who have been having a go at boxing for years now.
“This is a huge challenge for me. Mentally and physically, so I am more concerned about if I can get through the training process and get a professional license.
“That is the area that I am focused on at the moment before I can go into the ring and take my shot”.
He also revealed that he was going into boxing with his eyes open.
