5 dead and 8 injured in Florida airport shooting

Five people have been killed and more than eight are injured after a lone gunman opened fire at an airport in Florida. The incident took place at lunchtime in the lower level baggage claim area of Terminal 2 in Fort Lauderdale Hollywood Airport.

The gunman was immediately arrested and has already been identified as 26 year old Esteban Santiago. While Mr Santiago is originally from New Jersey, he had been living in Naples, Florida and was said to have military identification on him when he was taken into custody.

Around an hour and a half after that incident, armed police were seen dashing into a parking lot, while people dived between vehicles to take shelter form the perceived threat. However, officers at a press conference have now said that the only gunshots were in the terminal and that they believe there was only one gunman.

According to witnesses, the gunman did not say anything throughout the incident, and appeared to be targeting people at random. He started shooting as air passengers were waiting for their luggage.

One passenger, John Schlicher, said: “I put my head down and prayed.” He also described how his wife and mother in law tended to the injured. He said he believed that the gunman reloaded his weapon at least once.

Suspected terror attack

President-elect Donald Trump has tweeted: “Monitoring the terrible situation in Florida. Just spoke to Governor Scott. Thoughts and prayers for all. Stay safe!” It is understood that the shooting may have been a terror attack. It is the latest in a series of mass shootings in America in the past few years, some of which have been carried out by terrorists.

Video has now emerged from the Florida airport, which shows hundreds of passengers standing together outside, with a number of emergency vehicles also sitting outside the terminal. The airport is one of the busiest in the US.
